In 2016 I discussed the integration of new compositional works in the Out of the Shadows Sydney festival with the Head of Composition and Music Technology at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Dr Damien Ricketson. Together we put out a call for expressions of interest, and received two exciting proposals that I felt could utilise the talents of the wind and percussion instrumentalists from the SSO Fellowship. This world premiere performance of Daniel Biederman's composition The Last Renaissance Man: POW Years, 1941-1945 is conducted by Roger Benedict (the SSO Fellowship Artistic Director), with Nils Hobiger (oil-can cello, cello), Kim Falconer (flute), Joshua Oates (oboe), David McGregor (clarinet), Christopher Haycroft (bassoon), Alice Yang (horn), Jenna Smith (trumpet), Amanda Tillett (trombone), Samuel Butler (percussion) and the composer, Daniel Biederman (recorded sound, backstage behind the instrumentalists).
