This work features in all performances of Gideon Klein: Portrait of a Composer. Though the Duo for Violin and Cello is incomplete, it is today performed and published, because even as it stands, it is a powerful and interesting piece. Its incompletion, due to Klein's transportation to Terezín, obviously provides an additional level of interest. The manuscript contains a completed first movement, dated 6 November 1941, and a second movement which, although breaking off after just 40 bars, is slow enough to make this fragment seem fairly substantial. This movement carries no date, but it can safely be assumed that he was working on it until his deportation on 4 December 1941. There are no further sketches to suggest additional movements.
