This festival further explored themes and ideas from the 2016 Czech festival Ze stínu: hudba a divadlo ze židovského archive (Out of the Shadows: Music and Theatre from the Jewish Archive), supported by funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. It ran from July 2019 to February 2020, with events in various towns and cities.
The festival’s enigmatic appellation provoked questions: Who is Gido? Why is he coming home? Where has he been? It uses a diminutive of his name, often used by family and close friends, also occasionally on contemporary concert programmes, to denote a certain familiarity with Klein. Where possible, concerts were in more intimate, even domestic, venues, rather than large concert halls, and it took his music from the ghetto, and back to his cultural and geographic roots. The festival focused on young professional local musicians and composers, commissioning new music, and on music-making from school pupils and conservatoire students.
